Awareness Programme Organized by Sri Lanka Embassy in Jordan Motivates Safe and Legal Migration

As part of ongoing efforts in promoting safe and legal migration, the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Amman successfully organized an awareness programme on 22nd August 2025 at the Embassy premises, with the participation of the Sri Lankan community and representatives of garment factories in Jordan.

In her opening remarks, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Jordan J.A.D.S. Priyangika Wijegunasekara highlighted the critically important role played by overseas Sri Lankan employees in shaping the country’s economic and social development. The Ambassador further emphasized the importance of preventing illegal migration and raised awareness of its consequences, highlighting literature on safe and legal migration.

The program consists of comprehensive presentations on human smuggling and trafficking and safe migration by the Counsellor, SLBFE (Employment & Welfare) G.R.S. Gunawardana, and consular functions by H.P. Liyanage, Consular Officer of the Mission. Idunil Wickramasinghe, Bank of Ceylon Representative in Jordan, provided guidance on effective ways of sending foreign remittances to Sri Lanka, opening new accounts, and utilizing formal banking channels.

An interactive question and answer segment allowed participants to seek clarifications on matters related to labour welfare and protection and consular services.

The Embassy officials extended special consular assistance to the needy Sri Lankans at the end of the programme.
The event reflected the embassy’s continued commitment to safeguard the welfare of Sri Lankan migrant workers and provide effective consular services to its community in Jordan.
