Labour Welfare Introduction

  • In coordination with the Consular Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE), the Labour section addresses issues related to the labour welfare of Sri Lankan migrant workers in Jordan, and secures more job opportunities for Sri Lankans.
  • Approximately, 14,000 Sri Lankans are currently working in Jordan. Around 12,000 Sri Lankans are employed in the apparel sector, while 2,000 are in domestic work and housekeeping, and a few hundreds of Sri Lankans are in the agricultural sector.
  • The functions of the Labour Section:
    • Ensuring the welfare of Sri Lankan workers
    • Promoting employment opportunities for Sri Lankans
    • Settling and resolving disputes over unpaid/underpaid salaries/wages
    • Inquiring complaints of contract breaches of employment contracts.
    • Liaising with government authorities for resolving the labour issues
    • Visits to prisons, hospitals, police, and other institutes related to labour welfare matters
    • Assisting ill workers and facilitating their repatriation
    • Visiting work sites whenever required
    • Facilitating to extend the contracts of the employment
    • Participating in and organizing community activities for workers
    • Verifying/attesting Labour contracts
    • Assisting with the repatriation or burial of deceased migrant workers
