





The Embassy of Sri Lanka organized a Diplomatic Reception to celebrate the 77th Independence Day of Sri Lanka at the Movenpick Hotel in Amman on 4th February 2025, following the Flag-Hoisting ceremony held at the Embassy premises. Around 250 guests, including senators, members of the diplomatic corps, government officials, mayors, prominent academic and business personalities, the media, and Sri Lankan well-wishers, attended the event.
Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, Nancy Namrouqa, graced the Independence Day Diplomatic Reception as the Guest of Honour and extended her warmest felicitations to the government and people of Sri Lanka on the 77th of Sri Lanka’s independence.
Addressing the gathering, Ambassador J.A.D.S. Priyangika Wijegunasekara highlighted Sri Lanka’s history, challenges and triumphs in Sri Lanka’s post-Independence journey, remarkable achievements in health and education sectors in independent Sri Lanka, and progress made in stabilizing Sri Lanka’s economy. Furthermore, she expressed significant milestones in the history of diplomatic relations and current trade, tourism, and investment cooperation between Sri Lanka and Jordan.
The Ambassador underscored the longstanding friendship between Sri Lanka and Jordan since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 1965. She mentioned that “Jordan and Sri Lanka share a strong and enduring friendship, built on mutual respect, shared cultural ties, and people-to-people connections. This year holds special significance as Sri Lanka and Jordan mark 60 years of diplomatic ties. Therefore, the Embassy is planning to organize several events throughout the year to highlight our close relationship and expand our partnerships.”
The Ambassador also expressed her gratitude to the Jordanian government for providing employment opportunities for Sri Lankans and for its support and care towards Sri Lankan employees and invited all foreign friends to visit Sri Lanka and experience our hospitality, culture, and natural beauty.
The Ambassador’s speech was followed by a cake-cutting ceremony jointly by the Ambassador and the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs.
The diplomatic reception was further enhanced by captivating traditional Sri Lankan dance performances that showcased Sri Lanka’s rich cultural heritage, presented by Sri Lankan employees from Mass and Classic apparel factories in Jordan.
The event featured the screening of promotional videos highlighting Sri Lanka’s tourist attractions.
All guests were treated to a sumptuous buffet, including Sri Lankan snacks and tea.
At the end, guests were presented with a delightful packet of the world-renowned Ceylon tea.
The event was generously funded by the well-wishers in Jordan.
